Cutting Down Nicotine and Going Nicotine-Free: A Step-by-Step Plan

Many people who have switched to vaping eventually want less nicotine, or none at all. It can be done if you approach it in stages rather than overnight. This guide shows you a practical step-by-step plan. One important point up front: this is knowledge drawn from everyday life in the shop, not medical advice. Anyone looking for support to quit will also find it through specialist services such as the stop-smoking line.
Why stages at all?
If you cut the nicotine too quickly, your body responds with cravings, irritability and the urge to draw harder or more often. That is exactly what you want to avoid. By reducing the strength gradually, you give your body time to adjust. Not a race, but weeks or months.
The maximum nicotine strength in Switzerland is 20 mg/ml. From there you work your way down. Which strength is meant for what is set out in detail in the nicotine strengths guide.
The step-by-step plan
A proven sequence looks like this. The timings are rough guides, not set in stone:
| Step | Strength | When to move on |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20 mg/ml | when the switch is firmly settled |
| 2 | 10 mg/ml | when you barely notice the new strength |
| 3 | 5 to 6 mg/ml | when you reach for the vape less often |
| 4 | 3 mg/ml | when the urge noticeably eases |
| 5 | 0 mg/ml | when only the ritual is left |
Stay on each step until it feels "normal" before you tackle the next. It is perfectly fine to hold a step for longer, or to go back up briefly if you need to.
With a refillable system the dosing is especially fine, because you choose the liquid at the exact strength. With an ELFLIQ liquid (e.g. 20 mg/ml Apple Peach) you start at the top and simply buy the same flavour in the lower strength for the next steps. That way the flavour stays the same, only the nicotine drops.
Practical tips to make it stick
- Keep the flavour. If you keep your usual flavour when changing step and only lower the strength, the step is easier. Which flavours hold up is covered in the guide to flavours and varieties.
- One variable at a time. Don't change device, flavour and strength all at once. Otherwise you won't know what caused a setback.
- Emergency plan. With a strong craving, it's better to go back briefly to the previous step than to switch fully back to the cigarette. That's not failure, it's part of the plan.
- Reduce the ritual once 0 mg is settled. If you've reached 0 mg and only reach for the vape out of habit, you can deliberately use it less often.
The last step: 0 mg and beyond
At 0 mg the nicotine is gone, but the vaping itself is still there. Some stay here for a while because the ritual helps them, others put the vape away completely afterwards. Both are fine. If you want to keep vaping nicotine-free, you'll find the right options on the overview page for nicotine-free vaping.
Bear in mind: nicotine-free does not mean harmless. The aerosol still contains flavours and carrier substances. Anyone who can stop altogether has done their body the biggest favour.
In brief
- Reduce in stages, not abruptly: 20 → 10 → 5 to 6 → 3 → 0 mg/ml.
- Hold each step until it feels normal; going back a step is allowed.
- Keep the flavour, only lower the strength, that makes the change easier.
- Refillable systems allow the finest dosing via the liquid strength.
Many products contain nicotine (up to 20 mg/ml); nicotine is highly addictive. Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Not a substitute for medical advice.
