Pod System Guide 2026: Switching from Disposable to Refillable
June 25, 2026 · 5 min read
After the disposable ban, the pod system is the way to go, and that's good news: it feels like a disposable but is rechargeable, cheaper per puff and offers hundreds of flavours. This guide shows how a pod system works and how to switch.
What is a pod system?
Two parts: a rechargeable battery and a pod cartridge holding the liquid and the coil. Empty pod? Charge via USB-C and replace or refill it. Two types:
- Prefilled (closed): ready-to-use pods, easiest to start with. E.g. the ELFBAR ELFA Pro.
- Refillable (open): empty pods you fill with your own e-liquid. Lowest cost per ml, maximum choice.
Switching from a disposable, step by step
- Nicotine strength: used to a 20 mg disposable? Start the pod at 20 mg/ml nicotine salt.
- Draw type: pods are almost always MTL (mouth-to-lung), just like a cigarette. Nothing to relearn.
- Model: prefilled for comfort, refillable to save, e.g. the LOST MARY BM6000.
- Flavour: the same as disposables (fruity, ice, tobacco), with or without nicotine.
Care & lifespan
- Priming: let a new pod rest for 3 to 5 minutes after filling.
- Coil change: burnt or weaker taste means the coil is spent (every 1 to 2 weeks depending on use).
- Battery: charge via USB-C; one charge lasts a day or more.
Is it worth it?
Yes. A disposable a week adds up. With a pod you buy the battery once, then only pods or liquid, often half the cost per puff. Swiss warehouse, free shipping from CHF 29, e.g. to Zürich.
In short
- Pod = battery + pod, rechargeable and ban-proof.
- Switching: 20 mg nicotine salt + MTL.
- Prefilled = easiest, refillable = cheapest.
