Your Vape Tastes Burnt or Scratches Your Throat: Causes and Fixes

A charred, bitter puff that scratches at the back of your throat: the notorious burnt hit. Almost everyone knows it. Most of the time it isn't a fault but a simple cause you can fix in two minutes. Here are the four most common reasons and what helps.
1. Dry coil (the most common cause)
The coil is the small heating element wrapped in a cotton wick that soaks up the liquid. If the wick is dry, the cotton burns on the draw instead of the liquid: it tastes charred and scratches straight away.
This happens in three situations:
- The tank or pod is nearly empty. Refill, wait a moment, done.
- You drew too quickly in a row (chain vaping). The wick can't reabsorb fast enough. A 20 to 30 second pause between puffs is enough.
- The coil is new and not primed. With a fresh coil or a new refillable pod, the cotton needs to absorb liquid first. Fill it, then let it sit for five to ten minutes before your first draw. How to do it cleanly is covered in the guide filling a pod correctly.
2. Coil at the end of its life
Coils wear out. After one to three weeks (depending on use) the flavour turns flat, then slightly burnt, and finally properly scratchy. That is normal wear, not a fault.
A dark, crusty coil needs replacing. On devices with a swappable atomiser head you do this in a minute, see changing the coil. On pod systems with a built-in coil you simply replace the whole pod.
3. Too much power
If your device has an adjustable wattage, too much power can dry the wick out faster than it can reabsorb. The result: a dry, harsh draw even though there is plenty of liquid.
Most compact pods handle this automatically and have no setting at all. If yours does: mind the wattage printed on the coil and start at the lower end. Better a touch too little than too much.
4. Wrong nicotine strength or wrong liquid
A scratchy throat isn't always a burnt hit. Often it is simply too much nicotine for your draw technique.

Freebase nicotine (often in strengths around 3 to 6 mg/ml for lung draws) noticeably scratches the throat at high doses: this is the so-called throat hit. Nicotine salt feels smooth even at 20 mg/ml and is meant for mouth-to-lung draws. Taking deep lung draws on a small pod, or the other way round, quickly leads to a scratch. Quick check when it suddenly tastes burnt
- Tank/pod full? If not, refill and wait a moment.
- Just filled or new coil? Let it sit for five to ten minutes (priming).
- Drew too quickly? Take a break.
- Coil older than two or three weeks? Replace it.
- Scratches sharply but doesn't taste burnt? Check the nicotine strength.
