Update August 2026: Federal Supreme Court strikes down hybrid vapes

The Federal Supreme Court rulings of 14 April 2026 clarified one point: the legal 2 ml tank limit must not be circumvented with separately supplied or clip-on refill containers. This affects hybrid devices with a small 2 ml pod and a large 10 ml container; they can no longer be sold in Switzerland, and the first cantons are already checking. Pod systems with pods up to 2 ml are not affected. So if you want to move away from the disposable vape, a pod system is the way to go.

What it's about

In Switzerland it's becoming clear that disposable vapes (single-use devices with no way to recharge, such as the classic ELFBAR 600 type) are being phased out. Two arguments are the main drivers: the electronic waste from whole devices going in the bin, and youth protection. The trend is the same across Europe, and several neighbouring countries are already further ahead.

What it means for buyers

• Short term: disposable vapes are still partly available, as long as stocks last and the deadline hasn't taken effect. But anyone using them shouldn't count on that staying the case in the long run.
• Medium term: the range is shifting clearly towards refillable systems. Even today the assortment of pod systems is growing, while the choice of disposables is narrowing.
• On flavour: almost all the popular flavours are also available in a refillable version. So as a rule you don't have to give up your favourite flavour.

The obvious alternatives

When disposables fall away, the sensible route is a pod system, prefilled or refillable, cheaper per puff and with less waste:
