Disposing of Your Vape Properly: Recycling Instead of the Bin

Tossing an empty vape in the bin is convenient, but wrong. E-cigarettes contain a lithium battery and electronics, they count as electronic waste and do not belong in household rubbish. There they are not only a waste of resources, but also a genuine fire risk. Here's how to do it properly in Switzerland.
Why not in household rubbish?
In general waste, batteries get crushed and can ignite, which is regularly the cause of fires in collection lorries and sorting facilities. On top of that, the battery and electronics contain valuable materials that recycling can recover. Both are a clear argument against simply throwing a vape away.
Where you can return vapes
In Switzerland, returning electronic waste is free and straightforward. You have several options:
- Points of sale: retailers that sell e-cigarettes or electrical devices take back used devices free of charge, even without a new purchase. This applies to the vape as much as to empty pods and refill containers.
- Official collection points: through the return system (keywords erecycling.ch and SENS) you can find collection points near you. There you simply drop off small devices.
- Municipal collection: many municipalities and recycling centres also accept small electrical appliances.
Battery rule: never puncture or force it open
The most important point first: leave the battery in the device. Don't try to prise it out, puncture it or force it open. A damaged lithium battery can leak, overheat or catch fire. Hand in the device as a whole at the collection point, the facilities are designed for exactly that. Collecting made easy
The easiest approach is to keep a small box at home for empty pods and devices. Once it's full, you drop off the contents all at once at a point of sale or collection point.
