Vape Battery: How to Charge Safely and Handle It Properly

Almost every rechargeable vape contains a lithium battery, from a pod system like the ELFX to a hybrid device like the LOST MARY BM6000. These batteries are robust, as long as you treat them sensibly. Handle them carelessly and, in the worst case, they can overheat. Here are the points that really matter. Charging safely: the basic rules
A small battery is under the most strain during charging. Three things make the difference:
- An intact cable and a normal power adapter. An ordinary phone charger rated 5V/1A to 5V/2A is enough. High-power fast chargers do nothing for a 500 to 800 mAh battery and strain it unnecessarily.
- Don't charge unattended. Certainly not overnight. Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface, not on the sofa, bed or a stack of paper.
- Unplug when full. A protection circuit is built in, but the battery still doesn't like being left on the mains permanently.
If the device becomes warmer than lukewarm while charging, unplug it immediately and stop using it.
Heat and cold: the battery's biggest enemy
Lithium batteries are sensitive to temperature, in both directions.
Heat is the real risk. Never leave your vape in the car in summer; behind glass it quickly reaches 50 to 60 degrees. Direct sun on the windowsill or at the beach is also too much. Heat ages the battery and in the worst case can damage it.
Cold is less dangerous but annoying: in winter, performance drops noticeably and the battery feels like it empties faster. That sorts itself out once the device is back at room temperature. Let a cold vape warm up first before you charge it.
Rule of thumb: what feels comfortable to you is fine for the battery too. Store the vape dry and at room temperature.
Swollen or damaged devices
There are a few warning signs you should take seriously:
- The casing bulges or feels swollen.
- It has a sweet, chemical smell or leaking liquid is visible.
- The device gets hot for no reason, even when it isn't charging.
In these cases: stop using it, don't charge it, move it away from your body and from flammable items. A bulging battery should be disposed of, not repaired.
Important: never remove the battery yourself, puncture it, crush it or throw it into water. On most vapes it is permanently built in anyway. And a lithium battery must never, under any circumstances, go into a fire.
Dispose of it properly instead of in household waste
A faulty or empty vape is electronic waste, not household rubbish. The battery is the reason: in residual waste or in incineration it can cause harm.
